| | | Kyfer Madness The Best of Kyf Brewer Of course the cover of this CD is a take off on the "Reefer Madness" film - and a pretty cool design it is too. But thank God the music is even better than the cover. Kyf Brewer is one of those very special musicians - songwriters - artists who couldn't write a bad song if his life depended on it.

More about Kyf Brewer
Kyf Brewer's Rock'n'Roll history goes back to his days in The Ravyns - a band from Baltimore which first came to prominence through the soundtrack from the film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High with the song Raised on the Radio. His next band was Company of Wolves who were signed to Polygram, but after their first album didn't live up to mass merchandising expectations, the band went indie and actually surpassed their debut album with Shakers and Tamborines and Steryl Spycase.
Enter Kyf Brewer - Solo Artist!
The first solo effort called Me and My Big Mouth gives away Kyf's penchant for humor, at least in his album titles. This CD features a multitude of catchy tunes like Diesel and Slow Motion not to mention Soul Jerky and one of the best tunes in his repertoire, Turning into Elvis.
Then comes Salvador Deli and the humorous titles continue. Here Kyf demonstrates just how cool you can be as a songwriter with tunes like the massively hip Everything She Says and Nothing to do with Being in Love as well as many others. Then came Bright Jewels - a CD that he didn't even know he had in him. If it's possible for an artist to get better with each and every release, then look no further than Kyf Brewer.
Kyf Brewer - Bright Jewels
Pop Bright Jewels into the player and envision Elvis Costello and Sheryl
Crow storming the jukebox in Steve Earleıs diner. Add Brewer's ability to
play just about every instrument from guitars & drums to bagpipes, a
collection of sublime songs & imaginative artwork, and you have one of the
finest new releases of 2002. Produced by Cliff Hillis, and including the
shining talents of Crown Jewelsı Steve Conte, Starbellyıs Dennis Shocket,
fiddler Julie Baker, and Kyfıs guitarist & collaborator Jumpinı Dave
Woodworth, this is an audible feast.
With strong hooks and memorable melodies & chord progressions, Bright
Jewels is by far the best of the Kyf Brewer discography. Kyf is a true
veteran of the entertainment industry with credits ranging from playing keys
in The Ravyns (best known for their hit "Raised on the Radio" from the Fast
Times at Ridgemont High Soundtrack) to being the narrative host for over
forty episodes of VH-1's "Before They Were Rock Stars", to piping at the
Millenium Pipes Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, with nearly 10,000 other
pipers and drummers at Edinburgh Castle for Prince Charles himself. Don't
forget that songs from Brewer's discography can be found on more TV and
movie soundtracks that you can shake a drumstick at including Party of Five,
Dawson's Creek and the recent J Lo movie, Enough.
Brewer, whose infectious pop-rock melodies are steeped deep in the roots
of the 60's and 70's, recorded Bright Jewels with the intent to infiltrate
anyone's record collection from fans of AAA to country-rock. The opening
hook of "Grace" creeps into your head and stays for the weekend, while the
drinking ballad, "Dear Richard's Wake", plops you right into a pub in Dublin
with a pint of your own singing along with the band by the second chorus.
Listen to the sweet and poignant "Home" which pairs Kyf with the simple,
eloquent vocal of his wife Kay as they harmonize about life together like no
other duo you've heard. "Tongue-Tied-Teary-Eyed" gives the Stones a run for
their money, and "Hey Madeliene", with its jangle-blurred soundscape and
sleepy drunk-on-life vocal performance, displays Brewer's continual growth
as a master songsmith.
